L'Associazione culturale Byzantion ha il piacere di ospitare l'artista Nikolaos Thessalos, che ci parlerà di arte e disegno incentrate sul mondo bizantino
1) Parlaci di te, dei tuoi interessi ecc.
- Sono nato nel 1986 in Tessaglia, Grecia. Negli ultimi dieci anni lavoro e vivo ad Atene.
Anche se il mio vero nome è Nikolaos, “Thessalos” è il mio nome d'arte, ispirato dal mio luogo di origine. Adoro disegnare fin dall'infanzia, ma sono stato anche appassionato per molti anni di arti marziali (Tae Kwon Do e Kick-Boxing).
2) Che interesse hai per il mondo bizantino?
- è un periodo di 1100 anni con aspetti e caratteristiche differenti, pietre miliari che hanno plasmato la nostra storia.
Credo che abbia una caratteristica profondamente didattica e costituisca una grande eredità.
3) Raccontaci della tua arte, di quando hai iniziato e qual è stato il tuo primo, importante capolavoro?
- Sin da bambino ricordo di aver provato a disegnare cose. Nel 2010 da adulto, ho deciso di istruirmi sulle arti visive. Avendo l'impulso della giovane età, ho deciso di studiare sui fumetti anche se non ho mai lavorato professionalmente su questo argomento, poiché il mio vero amore era la storia reale e non i supereroi di fantasia. Rispetto profondamente l'arte dei fumetti, ma non è qualcosa per me.
La prima opera d'arte che divenne il mio primo passo professionale nell'arte, fu il “Psychomahia of Digenis Akritas”. Il disegno ora è una decorazione a muro nella casa di un bizantinista americano.
4) Che tipo di stile hai? È personale o hai un maestro o qualcuno che ti ha aiutato a trovare una strada?
- Il mio stile di disegno è tratteggiato e punteggiato. L'adozione di questo stile è una scelta maturata negli anni. D'altra parte il soggetto storico e in generale eroico delle mie opere è qualcosa che è letteralmente iniziato come una scintilla. Avevo cinque o sei anni quando mi fu regalato un libro illustrato della mitologia ellenica. È stata una vera rivelazione. Le illustrazioni erano davvero magnifiche e hanno fatto esplodere la mia immaginazione. L'illustratore era Severino Baraldi.
5) Come inizia la tua ispirazione per una nuova opera d'arte?
- Non ho uno schema standard per trarre ispirazione al fine di iniziare qualcosa di nuovo. Potrebbe essere dovuto a una richiesta di commissione personalizzata o potrei leggere qualcosa di interessante e sentire il bisogno di raffigurarlo a modo mio.
6) Parlaci del capolavoro di cui sei più orgoglioso e perché
- Come detto, il mio primo pezzo professionale è il “Psychomahia of Digenis Akritas” che mi è stato commissionato da un bizantinista americano. La stessa persona ha ordinato una seconda commissione ma questa volta mi è stato chiesto di creare un ritratto dell'imperatore Costantino XI Paleologo. Dopo aver creato alcune bozze e schizzi approssimativi, mi sono reso conto che per quanto impressionante avrei raffigurato l'imperatore, sarebbe stato incompleto se non avessi incluso alcune delle altre figure importanti che hanno preso parte alla difesa della città o ci hanno lasciato testi e scritti sugli eventi dell'assedio, lasciandoci questa meravigliosa eredità. La perdita della regina delle città è sempre stata un argomento molto emozionante per me e questo mi ha dato l'impulso a non creare un'altra rappresentazione di battaglia ma qualcosa di più umile. Questi uomini erano soprattutto umani e non riesco a immaginare come si sentissero prima dell'assalto finale dei nemici. Ma questo è quello che ho cercato di mostrare. Avendo la loro "Ultima Cena", si preparano non solo fisicamente ma anche mentalmente per il sacrificio finale.
7) Quanto tempo impieghi per realizzare una nuova opera d'arte?
- Dipende dalle dimensioni dell'opera d'arte, dalla complessità del soggetto e dal livello di difficoltà della rappresentazione. Ma non importa la facilità dell'opera d'arte, a causa dello stile che uso, ho bisogno di almeno un mese per completare completamente qualcosa.
8) Che cos'è l'arte per te?
- Pensare, studiare, esprimere e produrre risultati.
9) Pensi che l'eredità dell'impero bizantino sia abbastanza considerata oggi?
- Per la maggior parte delle persone che conosco, l'era dell'impero bizantino è un'epoca molto incompresa. La maggior parte delle persone crede che fosse un periodo di oscurità, teocrazia e che i bizantini odiassero l'epoca classica. È completamente sbagliato.I bizantini amavano la civiltà e la letteratura greca antica. Ciò che disprezzavano era l'antica religione. La prova del loro amore per l'antichità può essere vista nel loro enorme tentativo di salvare quanti più testi antichi potevano copiandoli e proteggendoli nei monasteri. Insegnavano filosofia e arte retorica nel "Pandedacterion" (Università) di Costantinopoli. Ogni uomo o donna istruita conosceva i testi del primo capitolo dell'Iliade di Omero. Anche il modo in cui hanno creato i propri testi seguiva lo stile dell'antica letteratura greca. Per queste ragioni credo che l'eredità dei Bizantini sia oggi estremamente sottovalutata.
10) È difficile essere un artista oggi?
- In un modo o nell'altro è difficile essere un artista. Soprattutto nei momenti difficili, come quello che stiamo attraversando in questo momento. Nei momenti difficili la prima professione che subisce gravi danni è l'arte. L'arte è un lusso e la maggior parte delle persone in questi tempi dà la priorità a coprire tutti gli altri obblighi e bisogni.
11) Pensi di essere bravo per un talento naturale o per il duro lavoro? O entrambi?
- Non posso davvero dire di essere bravo o no, non ne ho davvero idea. Nessuno, in fondo, può parlare per sé, ma deve essere lasciato al giudizio di chi è “esposto” alla sua arte. Quello che ho visto fino ad ora è che, per la maggior parte di coloro che hanno successo, la loro formula è il 95% di duro lavoro e il 5% di talento naturale, il che significa che non importa quanto tu possa avere talento, se non lavori sulla tua arte non potrai mai raggiungere il tuo massimo potenziale. Inoltre, due persone, una talentuosa e una meno talentuosa, se entrambe lavorano duramente sulla loro arte, la loro unica differenza sarà che le persone di talento naturale saranno un piccolo passo avanti. Anche su questo tendo ad essere d'accordo.
12) Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?
- In questo momento sto creando una rappresentazione della battaglia del fiume insaguinato che ebbe luogo nel 1838 tra i coloni Zulu e Voortekker. Un evento molto importante per il popolo del Sud Africa. Dopodiché ho molti progetti in mente ma per ora voglio mantenerli inediti.

1) Tell us about yourself, what you do, your hobbies ect.
- I was born in 1986 in Thessaly, Greece. Since the last 10 years I work and live in Athens.
Although my true first name in Nikolaos the last name “Thessalos” is my artistic nickname inspired by my birthplace. Since I was a kid, I loved drawing but for many years I was also involved with martial arts (Tae Kwon Do and Kick-Boxing).
2) Why your interest in the Byzantine world?
- It is a period of 1100 years with many and different aspects and milestone events that shaped the course of history.
I believe that it has a deeply didactic character and constitutes a great legacy.
3) Tell us about your art, when you started and what was your first, important masterpiece?
- Since I was a child I remember myself trying to draw things. 2010 as an adult now, I decided to educate myself on visual-arts. Having the impulse of the young age, I decided to study on comics although I never worked professionally on that subject, as my true love was real history and not fictional Superheroes. I deeply respect the art of comics but it’s not something for me.
The first artwork that became my first professional step in art, was the “Psychomahia of Digenis Akritas”. The original artwork now decorates the walls of the house of an American Byzantinologist.
4) What kind of style do you have? Is it personal or do you have a master or someone who helped you to find a path?
- My drawing style is crosshatching and stippling. The adoption of this style is a choice that matured over the years. On the other hand the historical and in general heroic subject of my artworks is something that literally begun as a spark. I was five or six years old when an illustrated book of the Hellenic mythology was given to me as a gift. It was a true revelation. The illustrations were truly magnificent and made my imagination explode. The name of the illustrator was Severino Baraldi.
5) How your inspiration for a new artwork starts?
- I don’t have a standard pattern to earn inspiration in order to start something new. It might be either due to a custom commission request or I may read something interesting and feel the need to depict it in my way.
6) Tell us about the masterpiece you are most proud of and why
- As I mentioned above my first professional step in art was the “Psychomahia of Digenis Akritas” which was commissioned by an American Byzantinologist. The same person ordered a second commission but this time I was asked to create a portrait of emperor Konstantinos Palaiologos XI. After creating a few drafts and rough sketches, I realized that no matter how impressive I would depict the emperor, it would be incomplete if I didn't include some of the other important figures that took part in the defense of the city or left us texts and scripts about the events of the siege, leaving us this wonderful legacy. The loss of the queen of cities have always been a very emotional subject for me and this gave me the impulsion not to create another battle depiction but something more humble. These men were humans above all and I cannot imagine their feeling before the final assault of the enemies. But this is what I tried to show. Having their own "Last Supper", they prepare not only physically but also mentally for the ultimate sacrifice.
7) How much time do you take to make a new art piece?
- It depends on the size of the artwork, the subject complexity and the difficulty level of the depiction. But no matter the easiness of the artwork, due to the style I use, I need at least a month to fully complete something.
8) What is “art” for you?
- Thinking, studying, expressing and result yield.
9) Do you think byzantine empire legacy is enough considered today?
- For most people I know, the ages of the Byzantine empire is a very misunderstood era. Most people believe that it was a time of darkness, theocracy and that the Byzantines hated the ancient civilization. That is completely wrong. The Byzantine loved the Ancient Greek civilization and literature. What they despised was the ancient religion. The proof of their love of antiquity can be seen in their huge attempt to save as many ancient texts as they could by copying them and protecting them in the monasteries. They were teaching philosophy and the rhetoric art in the “Pandedacterion” (University) of Constantinople. Every educated man or woman knew the lyrics of the first chapter of Homer’s Iliad. Even the way they created their own scripts were following the style of the ancient Greek literature. For those reasons I believe the legacy of the Byzantines is extremely underrated today.
10) It’s difficult being an artist today?
- Somehow or other it is difficult to be an artist. Especially on difficult times, like the one we are going thru right now. On hard times the first profession that is severely damaged, is art. Art is a luxury and most people on such times prioritize to cover all their other obligations and needs.
11) Do you think you are good because of a natural talent or hard work? Or both?
- I really can’t tell if I’m good or not, I truly have no idea. After all, no one can speak for himself but must be left to the judgment of those who are “exposed” to his art.
What I have seen though until now, is that most of those who are successful, their formula is 95% hard work and 5% natural talent, meaning that no matter how talented you may be, if you do not work on your art you will never achieve your maximum potentials. Also, two persons, one talented and one lesser talented, if they both work hard on their art, their only difference will be that the naturally talented will be one small step ahead. On that I tend to agree too.
12) What are the main future projects for you?
- Right now I am creating a depiction of the blood river battle that took place in 1838 between Zulus and Voortekker settlers. A very important event for the people of South Africa.
After that I have many projects in mind but I want to keep them unpublished for now.
